A leader of German biblical scholarship and one of the foremost New Testament scholars of the twentieth century, Ernst Ksemann devoted a lifetime to the study of Romans. Considered the capstone of Ksemann’s pioneering work in Pauline theology, Commentary on Romans in its first two German editions sold out within the first year of publication. / Translated here into English from the fourth German edition by Geoffrey W. Bromiley, Ksemann’s individualistic, frequently provocative exposition emphasizes theological rather than historical questions. Though thoroughly conversant with the current historical and theological literature as demonstrated parenthetically throughout the text and in the extensive bibliographies preceding each section of the text Ksemann divides his commentary into sections according to what he sees as the key theological concepts of the letter the righteousness of God and justification by faith.
